What is wax therapy?

A gentle heat treatment used to prepare you for movement.

Wax therapy uses low-melting paraffin wax as a form of heat treatment. It is most often used on the hands and wrists, where the warmth may help reduce the feeling of stiffness and support comfortable movement before exercise or hands-on treatment.

At PhysioPoint, wax therapy is not presented as a stand-alone cure. When suitable, it is used as part of a wider plan that may include assessment, movement advice, exercises and rehabilitation tailored to your goals.

Designed around your plan

We discuss whether wax therapy is appropriate before it is included in your treatment.

How it may help

Useful support before the active part of your rehabilitation.

The purpose of wax therapy is to make the area feel more comfortable and ready to move. The most important progress still comes from the right movement, exercise and advice for you.

safe, meaningful progress.

01

Ease stiffness

The warmth may help the hands and wrists feel less stiff, particularly before you begin your exercises or usual activities.

02

Support comfortable movement

By helping the surrounding soft tissues relax, wax therapy can be a useful way to prepare for gentle mobility work and functional movement.

03

Complement your programme

Where appropriate, it can sit alongside strengthening, range-of-motion work, self-management advice and a tailored home exercise plan.

What to expect

Simple, supervised and built around your comfort.

Before starting, your clinician will check the skin and discuss any health factors that may affect suitability. If treatment is appropriate, the hand or wrist is dipped into the warm wax to create layers of wax, then wrapped to retain the heat.

Once the wax is removed, your session moves into the active part of your plan. This may include hand and wrist exercises, mobility work, strengthening or advice for managing everyday tasks more comfortably.

01

Assess and prepare

We check your skin, sensation, circulation and current symptoms, then explain the treatment and obtain your consent.

02

Apply gentle warmth

Layers of warm paraffin wax are applied to the appropriate area, then insulated so the warmth can be retained comfortably.

03

Move and progress

We use the treatment time to support the movement, exercise and rehabilitation steps that are most relevant to your goals.

Safety comes first

Wax therapy is only used after a clinician has confirmed it is suitable for you.

Is wax therapy safe?

We screen carefully before any heat treatment.

When delivered using appropriate equipment and following a suitability check, wax therapy is generally well tolerated. However, it may not be appropriate at that time for everyone.

01

Please tell us about any cuts, open or newly healed wounds, ulcers, infections, rashes or active skin flare-ups in the area to be treated.

02

Let us know if your joints are hot or very inflamed, or if you have recently had a flare of an inflammatory condition.

03

Tell your clinician if you have reduced sensation, poor circulation, diabetes, a skin allergy or any difficulty judging hot and cold temperatures.

04

Always tell us about relevant health conditions, medication changes or anything that makes you unsure about heat treatment.
Possible short-term effects can include temporary heat rash, skin irritation or mild sensitivity. Your clinician will explain any relevant risks and alternatives before treatment begins.

Comfort-focused care

Support that helps make movement feel more manageable.

A supportive treatment, not a replacement for rehabilitation

The goal is to help you move with more
confidence.

Wax therapy may make movement feel more comfortable in the short term, but your plan is built
around practical rehabilitation that helps you work towards lasting improvements in function.
