Acupuncture at PhysioPoint

Thoughtful treatment, tailored to your symptoms and goals.

Acupuncture has its origins in traditional Chinese medicine. In a physiotherapy setting, it may be considered as one option within a broader plan for pain, movement and rehabilitation.

Following an individual assessment, your clinician will discuss whether acupuncture may be suitable, what it involves and how it could fit alongside your exercise programme, hands-on treatment or wider rehabilitation goals.

Individual clinical care

We discuss whether acupuncture is appropriate for you before treatment begins.

How acupuncture works

A treatment option with a clear role in your rehabilitation.

Very fine needles are inserted into carefully selected points on the body. Depending on your assessment and treatment approach, the needles are usually left in place for around 15 to 30 minutes while you are positioned comfortably.

The precise mechanisms are still being researched. Acupuncture is not a stand-alone cure, and it will not replace medical assessment, prescribed medication or the active elements of your rehabilitation plan.

Evidence-informed choice

For adults with chronic primary pain, NICE advises clinicians to consider a single course of acupuncture or dry needling in appropriate circumstances. Evidence and suitability vary by condition, so we will discuss what is relevant to you.

Your appointment may include

01

A review of your symptoms, movement, health history and treatment goals.

02

A discussion of acupuncture, expected sensations and your consent before treatment.

03

Needle placement selected around your individual presentation and comfort.

04

A period of quiet rest while the needles are in place, where appropriate.

05

Aftercare advice and a plan for movement, exercise or your next treatment step.

A complete plan, not a stand-alone promise

Using treatment time to support meaningful progress.

When acupuncture is suitable, the aim is to support your ability to move, exercise and take part in
the activities that matter to you.

01

Assess

We look at the pattern of your symptoms, any contributing factors and what you want to get back to doing.

02

Treat

Acupuncture may be used where it is appropriate and agreed, with your comfort and informed consent at every stage.

03

Progress

We use your plan to build confidence in movement, progress exercise and support everyday function beyond the session.

Comfort and consent first

You can ask questions, pause or decline treatment at any time.

Safety and aftercare

Important information before your appointment.

Acupuncture is generally well tolerated when delivered by a trained practitioner using sterile, single-use needles, but it is not appropriate for everyone. We will discuss your individual circumstances before treatment.

01

Please tell us if you take blood-thinning medication or have an increased risk of bleeding.

02

Let us know about any skin condition, skin infection, current illness or allergy around the proposed treatment area.

03

Tell your clinician if you are pregnant, think you may be pregnant, or are feeling particularly unwell.

04

Tell us if you have previously felt faint with needles or medical procedures, so we can plan your treatment comfortably.
Possible short-term effects can include mild soreness, a small amount of bleeding or bruising, drowsiness, light-headedness or a temporary increase in symptoms. Do not drive or use machinery until it is safe to do so if you feel drowsy or dizzy after treatment.

One-to-one care

Treatment planned around your comfort, goals and progress.
